Project Overview

A project from my Representation and Spatial Analysis class of the MFA Interior Design program, where we study the E1207 house by Eileen Gray and try to represent our understanding of her works. The project aimed to uncover how the E1207 house reflects Gray's identity as both a woman and an innovative designer of the early 20th century.

Research and Reframe

Choosing one piece of furniture from the E1207 house and create our initial collage based on my understanding of Eileen. I picked the satellite mirror and tried to highlight its versatility and ability of the mirror to reflect the inside and outside of the house.

Refold and Recreate

Part two of the assignment, in which we have to create few differents paper foldings inspired by the chosen object, in my case the satellite mirror, and build a model of the objet itself with Rhino.

Reveal by Unfolding

Unfolding the guest bathroom of house E1027, where the satellite mirror is located, to reveal the interiority and the interaction of the object within the space.

Expanded Context

This collage expanded on the story of how Le Corbusier vandalized the E1027 house with his murals without consent and took credit for the house, which historians also see as a form of assault on Eileen. I tried to portray this sense of uneasiness and Corbusier's distorted view of Eileen as a woman and a designer.

Ephemeral Interior

Following the collage, we were assigned to create an intervention in our chosen space. I took this opportunity to make the psychedelic mirror to extend my understanding of Le Corbusier's assault and views of the house and Eileen herself.

Narrative Sequence

In this part of the assignment, I was tasked with creating a series of narrative illustrations inspired by the house. Continuing from my previous intervention with the mirror, I depicted how instead of being intruded by a stranger, the house formed a retaliation and intruded on the intruder instead. Showcasing confusion for the intruder, may it be Le Corbusier or everyone else who ever wronged the house.

The Drawdel

The last part of the assignment was to build a physical drawing model, which I created bearing the previous forensic interior as the main concept. Materials used are cardboard, threads, colored papers, and reflective paper.

Forensic Interior

Eileen Gray's house, E1027, was marred by Le Corbusier's intrusion. He vandalized the house with murals during his stay, crossing boundaries without her consent. Some historians likened his actions to a form of assault. In response, my artwork explores a speculative scenario if the house had powers.

Using mirrors, I depict Corbusier's distorted reflection, showcasing the house intruding upon him, symbolizing Gray's retaliation. The drawings of serial sections delve deeper, illustrating Gray's retaliation against intruders. The house becomes a trap for Corbusier, symbolized by a man (Corbusier), following a woman (Gray), and falling into an endless pit created by my Psychedelic Mirror.
